Just back from daily' beach run and swim. Only 3 of us on the beach now that the holiday season has finished last weekend. the town is much quieter all round. Although Sunday's the beach is thronging eith visitors. Surf's up today and I was well and truly pummelled a few times. Feels like half the Atlantic Ocean is sloshing about in my sinuses. Maybe that is why most of the locals lie like seals on the rocks on the lee side of the point. Doesn't look very comfortable to us tho. Yesterday we had a good boat trip out to an island offshore....lots of barfing on the way out as a fair swell running but all of us kept our breakfast down. The island was very similar to Tiritiri but without any trees. XXL sized seagulls were quite intimidating and I was glad I was wearing a hat. There was of course an old castle to check out and plenty of sea caves some of which we swam into/through. Tried to spot America from the lighthouse but it was too hazy. Back in Peniche I was subjected to a sharp haircut and a shave so no longer look like Robinson Crusoe.
The locals in our village are becoming more accepting of us and we have managed to have a chat with a few in a bastardised English/Portuguese. Our apartment is working out well and we are making good use of the pool...pretty much have it to ourselves. The custard tarts at the cafe along the road are a find and the coffee is not bad especially as it only costs $1. And the local store has most things we need. So it is a pleasant existence really though I don't know how long we could hack the serenity.
Tomorrow we plan to go for a wee road trip north of here.
