Boat to Berlenga

Our next adventure away from the beach and pastelaria... Hana had us up early to walk along the beach in the morning sun  to Peniche, in the hope of catching a ferry to the island Berlenga. No timetables could be found so we just arrived at the port and we fluked catching the very last trip out for the season. The swell was quite deceptive as it seemed calm in the harbour, and it seemed over cautious for the captain to hand out that sick bags before we set off. Not so, it was an exciting ride with swooping and crashing and wild spray. Soon the sick bags came out until more than half the passengers were clutching warm bulging bundles. For those of us feeling queasy the steep bare rock of the island was very welcome, and we climbed up to the top into the fresh air and wonderful views.

Clear evidence that all matter is made up of the same elements...be it 5 millenia, 5 centuries  or a mere 5 decades old.

Swimming around the fortress, braving the Atlantic with the fish and exploring the caves.

Barren landscape with gulls, guano and gheckos.

The trip back to Peniche was calm. The breakwater is a work of art!
