Saltzburg

Saltzburg is really beautiful. The old city is nestled in beside the milky aqua river Salzach between the Hohensaltzburg  fortress / castle on the mountain above and tree clad mountain range across the river. The architecture in old area is simpler and less ornate, in dusty muted yet clear pastel colours. It seems an elegant fusion of German and French style. Being brilliantly fine and 34 degrees we have roamed around the sights morning and evening and lazed in our hotel in the middle of the day. We went to a performance of Mozart's Requiem at the Cathedral last night. It was wonderful. The massed choir, 4 soloists, 2 solo violins and orchestra.  Its a different experience watching choirs sing in parts, to see the producers of the sound, it reinforces the hauntingly human element. It was also strangely poignant in that it brought back memories of listening to the Requiem at various stages  at home over the years.

Sunset at 8:30
We walked down and as it was late had to let ourselves out of a little iron door in the lower castle wall.
